At Downey Plastic Surgery, we deliver medical professionalism with every procedure. Dr. Downey and Dr. Cooper place an emphasis on safety and uses an innovative, flexible approach which is customized to your body and your goals. They always strive to achieve a highly satisfying experience for patients having either cosmetic or reconstructive surgical procedures.
Board Certification - It is important that you scrutinize the training, quality, experience, and safety of a physician before deciding if he should be your plastic surgeon. Dr. Downey is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a fellow in the American College of Surgeons, which indicates that he has met the highest level of requirements for practicing plastic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Cooper is board certified in the practice of General Surgery, has completed his plastic surgery residency, and is a candidate member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery. Our staff can help clarify for you the differences between the specialty of Plastic Surgery, which is a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties, and the growing number of self-invented boards whose members represent themselves as having training equivalent to a plastic surgeon, but might not.
Certified Surgical Facilities - Certified Surgical Facilities - Your treatment will be conducted either in an operating room at Northwest Hospital or a procedure room at Downey Plastic Surgery, all of which are certified by both Medicare and AAAASF (American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities.) In either case, you can be confident that your operation will be performed in a safe, modern facility with competent and caring staff. Downey Plastic Surgery patients who are in need of hospitalization will be admitted to Northwest Hospital & Medical Center unless requested otherwise.
Positive Identification of Patient and Surgical Site - At Downey Plastic Surgery we eliminate mistakes of identification by checking at least two identifiers belonging to you every time you visit. Dr. Downey and Dr. Cooper will pause before every operation and verbally list your identifiers and the name of the operation you are about to have. They will work directly with you before surgery to precisely identify the site of your surgery. And with your help, they will maintain an up-to-date list of medical conditions you have, medicines you are taking, and allergies you may have.
MRSA – A bacteria called Methicillin-Resistant Staph Aureus can cause severe stubborn infections after surgery. At Downey Plastic Surgery, we are concerned with your safe recovery from your operation. For some operations, beginning days before surgery, you will be instructed in measures to use, like antiseptic scrubs and antibacterial ointments, to reduce the risk of contracting this bacterial infection.
Venous Thrombo-embolism – This is a complication of blood clots forming in the leg veins of surgical patients. It can be due to many factors, particularly their immobility around the time of surgery, as well as a natural increase in the blood’s ability to form clot from the stimulus of surgery. For surgery performed under local anesthesia where you can immediately resume a normal, ambulatory life, this rarely incurs an increased risk of leg or lung blood clots. But longer operations associated with a longer period of recuperation and immobility, blood can form clots in the calf area, enlarge, and even break off and circulate to the lungs, where it can cause sometimes serious breathing or heart problems. At Downey Plastic Surgery, we seek to offer our patients protection against this medical problem. Measures we routinely use include elastic stockings and machine-driven leg compression sleeves, early standing and walking, as well as selected use of blood thinners around the time of surgery and during recuperation in the hospital.
