Skin Treatments

Refresh and Rejuvenate Your Skin

Downey Plastic Surgery offers a full line of skin treatments to gracefully turn back time, maintain the health of your skin, enhance your lips or reduce unwanted hair. Over the years, you may have noticed wrinkles in your face from sun exposure or daily expressions, such as laughing or squinting. You may just want healthier looking skin, fuller lips or are simply tired of waxing hair away.

Downey Plastic Surgery practices highly individualized care based on patient needs, which are jointly identified during a thorough consultation and examination. Dr. Downey will discuss the skin treatment options available and provide you a plan of care individualized for your unique situation.

During this process, Dr. Downey will learn more about the changes you desire. He will review the entire treatment journey with you, including anticipated results, possible risks and recovery expectations.

Botox – Botox is a popular, well-established treatment that temporarily smoothes expression lines on the face. Particularly when combined with dermal fillers such as Restylane, the effects of Botox on wrinkled skin can be very effective and can minimize the need for surgical treatments to maintain a youthful looking face. Botox does have limitations depending on the health of the skin or depth of wrinkles

During a Botox treatment, no anesthesia is necessary. A small amount of Botox is injected directly into the muscle that is causing the facial wrinkles. After about a day, the muscle will relax. The overall effects of the treatment will dissipate after three to four months, returning your facial animation back to normal.

Occasionally there will be some puffiness or pinkness in the injected area, although this typically subsides within a day. Complications of Botox therapy are rare, but could include excessive or prolonged weakening of the treated or nearby muscle, such as a weak eyelid.

Dermal Fillers – Used in conjunction with Botox, dermal fillers are effective at smoothing and tightening areas like the forehead, between the brows, crowsfeet or around the mouth. Two popular agents, Restylane and Juvederm, which are both naturally occurring biological substances, are good at filling out wrinkles or depressed soft tissue.

During the procedure, the dermal filler is injected with a very fine needle into the skin under the wrinkle, elevating the skin and making it immediately appear smoother and tighter. A local anesthetic injection can be given before the treatment, but most people find the injections relatively bearable. The treatment takes between five to ten minutes.

The effects of dermal fillers upon a wrinkle can last between four to twelve months, depending upon the depth of the wrinkle and its location. Temporary side effects are firmness or bumpiness in the filled area, which can be reduced with gentle massage. Complications from dermal fillers are rare, but can include lumpiness, redness and allergy to the collagen.

Lip Augmentation – Lip augmentation is performed to create rounder, fuller lips. There are various methods for adding volume to lips, however the most common involves injections of a dermal filler, such as Restylane within the vermilion, or red region, of the lips.

A local anesthetic injection can be given before the treatment, which usually takes just a few minutes, and allows Dr. Downey to place the filler unhurriedly and comfortably. During the procedure, the dermal filler is injected into the skin to produce more volume and fullness within the upper and lower lips.

For a few days after your lip treatment, you can expect to have slight redness, swelling, tenderness or an itching sensation in the treated area as a result of the injections.

Financial Considerations

In most cases, health insurance policies do not cover the cost of skin care treatments. Charges must be paid on the day of your treatment.
